resident of Republic Lays Foundation Stone for project of Security, General Surveillance of Nouakchott

The President of the Republic, His Excellency Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, laid, Tuesday at the headquarters of the general directorate for national security, the foundation stone for the project of security system and general surveillance of the city of Nouakchott.

The President of the Republic cut the symbolic ribbon to mark the start of works and unveiled the commemorative plaque of this significant project.

His Excellency listened to explanations from those in charge of the project about the details of its implementation, components, stages, and its role, after completion, in organizing traffic, maintaining security, protecting citizens and their properties, and improving the facade of the capital.

The President of the Republic was received at his arrival by the Prime Minister, Mr. Mohamed Ould Bilal, the Minister of the Interior and Decentralization, chief of national security, and other figures.

In a speech on this occasion, the mayor of Ksar, Mohmed Saleck Ould Amar, welcomed the president of the Republic, His Excellency Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, in the municipality of Ksar, where the project of the security system and general surveillance of the city of Nouakchott is launched.

On his part, the Chinese ambassador to Mauritania, HE Mr. li Baijun, expressed his pleasure to attend the launching ceremony of the project of the security system and general surveillance of the city of Nouakchott, in collaboration with the People’s Republic of China.

He thanked, on behalf of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China, the president of the Republic and the prime minister on this occasion.

He said that this project is the first of its kind within the planned package of projects after the outbreak of Covid-19. It will contribute, according to him, to supporting the social stability and economic prosperity of Mauritania.

He stressed that the bilateral relations will be boosted further under the leadership of HE the President of the Republic, Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, and the President of the People’s Republic of China, HE Mr. Xi Jinping.

The project consists of a control center, whose headquarters will be built in the vicinity of the buildings of the general directorate for national security; in addition to three regional centers in each the three regions of Nouakchott; control points in each of Nouakchott’s thirty police stations and four others at the entrances to the capital.

The main components of the project include:
– Surveillance cameras installed at main and public road junctions.

– An integrated communication system that includes 1500 portable radio sets, could be expanded by 3000 devices when necessary.

– A control center equipped with the latest technology that enables it to monitor the entire city of Nouakchott.

-Five mobile cars for control and remote control to move between the regions.

The project is due to be accomplished in fifteen months.

 

President of Republic Receives Annual Report of National Commission for Human Rights

The President of the Republic, Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, received Thursday the annual report of the National Commission for Human Rights on the Human Rights condition in our country in 2019-2020.

Upon submitting the report to the President of the Republic, the President of the National Commission for Human Rights, Mr. Ahmed Salem Ould Bouhoubeïny, made the following statement to the Mauritanian News Agency:

“I was honored by the reception from the President of the Republic, where I handed him the annual report of the National Commission for Human Rights report on Human Rights condition in Mauritania in 2019-2020.

The methodology of this report is based on highlighting the achievements in the field of Human Rights; meanwhile, it identifies the shortcomings and deficiencies and provides recommendations to the government.

We highly appreciate the President of the Republic’s stance on the commission’s work. In this regard, he urged the commission to play its role as an independent body in the rule of law”.

Foreign Ministry Organizes Iftar in Honor of Diplomatic Corps

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation, and Mauritanians Abroad organized, Tuesday in Nouakchott, an Iftar ceremony in honor of the diplomatic corps accredited to our country.

On this occasion, the Minister delivered a speech in which he welcomed the ambassadors of brotherly and friendly countries, representatives of international and regional organizations, and other personalities present, especially in this context whether at the temporal or spatial level.

“In the middle of Ramadan, our meeting carries great significance in terms of the values of tolerance and altruism. Values which lie at the heart of our fundamental Islamic religion which we now need more than ever as that source of inspiration, individuals and peoples, for the preservation of peace and brotherhood”, as he put it.

He added that with regard to space, the organization of this event at the Diplomatic Academy, which was created (in a spirit of reform) under a vision of His Excellency the President of the Republic relating to the department’s policy in order to meet the expectations of Mauritanian diplomacy in the field of research, continuous improvement, diplomatic memory.

“I am therefore honored to welcome you in this place intended to be a space for exchanges, documentation, and cooperation with brotherly and friendly countries”, said the Minister who affirmed that “our country has every reason to be proud of its membership in numerous partnerships due to its geostrategic location and its cultural heritage”.

Likewise, our country is also proud to have forged, since the advent of its independence, many friendly relations which have made it possible to reduce the effects of geographical distance with countries which have become as close to us as our neighbors”, as the minister explained.

I take the opportunity to confirm to each other that their friendship is, for us, a main source of pride and to express to them our boundless determination and our concern to strengthen these relations in the common interest of our countries and in the interest of humanity, as the Minister concluded.

The ceremony was marked by the organization of a visit to the headquarters of the Academy to see its various pavilions before taking a family photo.

The ceremony was attended by Ahmed Ould Sidi Ahmed Ould Die, Secretary General of the Ministry, and several advisers, officials, and central directors of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation, and Mauritanians Abroad.

 

Gigantic Whale Strands South of Nouakchott

Nouakchott,  28/04/2021

The Mauritanian Institute for Oceanographic and Fisheries Research (IMROP) in Nouadhibou announced that a large whale recently stranded on the Mauritanian beaches south of Nouakchott, where it was found on 25 April in the Legoueichich area.

A statement released by IMROP indicated that “the stranding of a whale was recently observed on the Mauritanian beaches south of Nouakchott, and this dead whale was found on Sunday 25 April 2021 in the Legoueichich area”.

Preliminary information indicates that it may be a Blue-type whale, 22 meters long, which is an average length for this species, which can reach 34 meters.

This whale is currently in an advanced state of decomposition, which may suggest that it probably died on the high seas, far from the stranding area.

Mauritanian waters are considered a transit region for many whales that move between the North and South Poles, while whales death is a natural phenomenon.

The Mauritanian coasts experienced between 2013 and 2019 the stranding of about fifty whales according to the IMROP database, some are due to normal causes while others are attributable to various factors.

The institute sent a scientific team to the scene to carry out the investigations and analyzes necessary to discover the possible causes of these deaths. Several causes are at the origin of whales’ stranding; some are natural, while others are due to various factors.
